Post-camp Activity 06: Brainstorming with Saurav Dhakal on Social Innovation Collaboratives (SICO)

Saurav shared an awesome home stay project, which is beautifully integrated with a cycling event and celebration (Ride SindhuliGadhi2017), learning about the history and supporting homestay project at Sindhul Gadhi. Ride SindhuliGadhi is a 153 KM Cycling journey from kathmandu to sindhuligadhi where will celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Sindhuligadhi battle Victory. The event will be of 2 Night and 3 Days. He kindly expressed his interests and generous support for NYC and UNC projects where youth would be greatly benefit from having such mentor like Saurav! 



Post-camp Activity 05: Bivishika from HCI

HCI offers a plethora of courses and activities in pre-ideation phase such as 5-day course on the national volunteers and social sustainability, extra-courses on spirituality, politics, and sociology, Then youth can practice at their community as they become members of Social Innovation Hub. It would be an excellent opportunities for NYC to join some programs according to their interests as they build their NYC structure and process as Social Enterprise. Post-camp Activity 03: Planning Next Steps with Sandip Poudel from Helvetas

Sandip Poudel, Elham Team Lead from Helvetas generously offer his support INNOCO and NYC. He kindly suggested that INNOCO and NYC might use a road map that Helvetas has developed and successfully implementing to produce entrepreneurs. Knowing that most of organizations in SICO are willing to support for NYC and UNC projects, INNOCO propose that we integrate Helvetas process within SICO as a pilot project. Helvetas process is a social innovation system that we can continue to explore the effectiveness and impact through a pilot project, supporting NYC and UNC (UAE-Nepal-Connect)2017 social enterprises. The following process is being proposed by INNOCO and Sandip verbally agreed to proceed the followings;

  1. Helvetas (Sandip Paudel) will train Pabitra (NYC) and Shashank (API Solution with Honey) to go through Helvetas 7-steps to bring idea to social biz.

  2. These 2 people will be certified as BIZ DEVELOPMENT SERVICE PROVIDER in 6-8 months.

  3. Simultaneously, trained service provider, Pabitra and Shashank will disseminate their knowledge and experience to other fellow youth innovators. UNC 8 projects will be assisted by NYC and SICO: A few collaboratives are already committed to mentor these groups.



Post Camp 02: Site Visit to Nepal Innovation Lab

Aru and Suyog kindly invited us to visit Nepal Innovation Lab. It was a lovely space with workshop and maker's space where innovative projects are exploring the full potentials. We discussed how we can collaborate to support our social innovation projects and strengthening Social Innovation Collectives.

Innovator 01: Pabitra Majhi


Namaste! I am Pabitra Majhi. I belongs to Sarlahi District, Terai region of Nepal. Currently , I am doing my masters in Economics at Patan Multiple College, Lalitpur. I am associated with Nepal Youth Cluster as a Programme coordinator. I had a wonderful experience of working as a same post for UNC 2017 Boot camp, which was successfully conducted in Kathmandu Nepal. Nepal Youth Cluster (NYC) to me means empowering other youth while building myself. One of the profound impact on me is introspecting and encouraging myself to work harder for youth development. I am also associated with Impact Talks as a human resource manager and going to organize Impact talks season 3 in Kathmandu soon. 

I am a fun loving person, easy going and can make friends easily. I love to be part of various social work that’s why I m always ready if there is any chance of doing good work which gives positive impact in society. I, with some of my school friends, have formed a team named 'Let’s Do It' team and will organize second phase of Student Empowerment Programme in various government schools in Sarlahi. To do all these things, I always get inspiration and huge support from my family, especially from my father, who is my strongest pillar. He is a driver by profession and always supports girls' education, which he provided me educational supports as much as he can. That’s the reason I proudly can say that I am the first girl of my own village having higher education. So that It has become my indispensable responsibility to promote and work for girls' education. Now, I have been involved with Ujyalo foundation as one of the cohort of EmpowHER 2017 Programme. Through which, I am planning to run my dream project called “Junkiri-Empowering Women through basic literacy and awareness” program in my home town Sarlahi. 

When I was child, in my society giving education to their daughter was not considered as much as important because many of them have a misconception that girl is the property of her in- laws. But I am very lucky that my father never discriminated us from boys and always encouraged and supported me to continue my study. Since mychildhood days ,I am very much influenced by the various social work done by my father. I still remember those days when He has spent his all saving money for the education and development of Majhi community instead of using it for our future but instead established our Majhi Community Youth Club in Sarlahi, where he took me many times so that I can learn many things on site.

In 2016, I was selected to be participated in leadership outdoor programme. At the same time I met INNOCO team and got opportunity to join UNC 2016 bootcamp that was my turning point, which provided me a lifetime experience. It has also given me a new perception to look into society and explore myself.  Before that camp, my views and perceptions towards everything is completely different, now I have grown to be a more confident and responsible woman. Honestly, I don’t have any big dream but being an economic student, I want to be a good economist and serve in economic development of my nation. I do believe that small change can make huge difference if we can work collectively. I am a lifetime learner and always seek opportunity to learn either from senior or junior.

Post Camp 01: Social Innovation Think Tank Meet-Up at Nepal Communitere on June 12

Monday 12th The bootcamp may be over, but there is no time to rest for the NYC team. Today Yunsun and Joanne organized a meeting with some important players in the Nepali entrepreneurial and social landscape. The aim of this Think Tank was to organize what is coming next for social innovation in Nepal and look for mentorship opportunities for the NYC 2016.

Yunsun and Joanne started by presenting INNOCO and the challenges and led the meeting. 

Multiple guests from different organization and initiatives accepted the invitation and Bahar from Communiteres Nepal kindly offered their local to host the assembly. 

NYCthen prensented their project. They started by sharing their stories giving the background context and then explaining their mission. Their goal would be to help the youth realizing their passion: bringing change through the youth, through the creation of a community in INNOCO’s steps.

Productive discussion to move ideas forward followed. Everybody seemed interested in the idea of joining forces to ensure the continuity of social innovation and nurturing an ecosystem of contacts and resources. 

After a fantastic Dal Bhat lunch, we are invited to visit the Nepal Innovation Lab nearby in Patan. The place is an amazing open space that instantly makes you want to work there. Aradhana Gurung, the lead manager of the Lab, explained us the functioning of the NGO and encouraged the NYC to come share and work on their ideas whenever they want.

UNC Social Innovation bootcamp has been successfully Conducted

Kathmandu : A 9 day-long social innovation bootcamp, UAE-Nepal Connect, UNC2017, organized by INNOCO and Nepal Youth Cluster from June 2-10 at ICA Training Center, has been completed. The program was organized in partnership with Leadership Corner, HCI, Nepal National Innovation Center, Nepal Communitere from Nepal, LAGI from USA and Zayed University from UAE.  INNOCO is a platform that cultivates youth to become social innovators. It means innovation co-designing through connection + collaboration + contribution. By connecting youth to local and international communities through project-based learning, INNOCO fosters these collaborations to help youth contribute and transform their lives and others for a greater good as social entrepreneurs and facilitators.  The main objectives of bootcamp was to generate big ideas through design thinking experience, learn how your innovation space works, understand the relationship of innovation space and biz model, exercise how to create experience innovation, refine social business model canvas, and pitch a biz idea. Last year, INNOCO delivered a 6 days UNC2016 Bootcamp, with an objective of creating Nepal Youth Cluster (NYC) which will lead the coordination and implementation of future activities. 20 youth participated from Leadership Corner, Volunteer In Nepal, and Choice Humanitarian in Nepal, and Zayed University in the UAE. During the 6 days, participants built their confidence through creative approaches in social innovation. It included case studies and field trips to provide them a base for deeper understanding of social enterprise. The bootcamp culminated in the cluster of 6 youth from Kathmandu; Monica Amatya, Saroj Basnet, Prachi Badu, Pabitra Majhi, Bijay Sunar, and Shaheera Pandey. The role of the cluster is to grow agents of social change, under the guidance of INNOCO in order to co-deliver UNC2017. The facilitators and contributors were from Korea, India, Lebanon, USA, France, and Nepal. The bootcamp was aiming to answer the challenge, ‘How Might We Create Social Innovation in Nepal?’. 56 applications from professionals and university students in Kathmandu and various rural districts were reviewed and 19Nepali youthwere selected to participate in the camp. NYC played a pivotal role in the application process. The camp was started with Mahabir Pun, a leading social entrepreneur figure in Nepal.  During first three days, the participants worked on the food system theme where they practiced empathy tools and the process to create social business. They visited Patale Gaun Organic Farm facilitated by Saurav Dhakalin on Saturday, 3rdJune. Participants interviewed the farmers and families, and used the data collected to form their empathic understanding of the problems and to help them clarify the challenges and gaps. Throughout the week, participants worked on their own social business ideas such as women empowerment, agriculture, eco-tourism, waste management, and child education. Participants were inspired by local and international social innovators through a Talk Series; Robert Ferry (Land and Art Generator Initiative), Prashant Singh (Himalayan Climate Initiative), Madan Rai (eco-tourism activist), Bikram Pun (Mushroom King), Sandeep Paudel (Elam at Helvatas), and Hadik Subedi (No Thanks!) The participants also learned how to build model their enterprise using the Social Business Model Canvas (SBMC) and assisted by hands-on activities such as value challenge, site research and interviews to validate their assumptions. Yunsun Chung-Shin, Joanne Renaux, Sara Shedid, Robert Ferry, and Amin Matni facilitated the formation of 10 social enterprise ideas to pitch to the invited panelist from various local stakeholders.  After successful completion of the bootcamp, Sajana Badel, one of the participants shared, “This bootcamp helped me to understand how social business works and how it creates impact on our society”. Similarly, another Participant Shashank said that this bootcamp provided him an opportunity to learn how to establish social business. As a supporting development for NYC and these 10 social enterprise leads, INNOCO is organizing the Social Innovation Think Tank gathering, which will take place on 12th June at Nepal Communitere hosted by Bahar Kumar. After 9 hectics days, this bootcamp has finally reached its end. 

Yusun and Joanne prepared us one last group activity before the final pitching. Each participant taped a sheet of paper on his/her back and, in turn, they all write nice things on each others back. The result is a playful and reflective 30 minutes giving everyone the energy to face the pitching.



Professionnals social entrepreneurs and businessmen from the Nepali scene had come to the ICA to listen to the participants' pitches and provide their experience and feedback during the event.

Our Prachi is once again doing a fantasic job as the ceremony master for the closing ceremony. She is then followed by Saurav Dhakal. 



The efforts of the last two days paid off and everyone gave tremendous presentations. After an emotional thank you tour full of gifts and pictures, the ceremony reached its end and it's time to say goodbye. After 9 days together parting feels weird but for the INNOCO team and the NYC 2016, lot of work has yet to be done!

The day ended on a lighter tone. We celebrated Sakshi's birthday and our last evening together.

  • Shashank (Honey Business in Nepal): traditional way, team with the flow chart (advisor, mentors, marketers etc if missing say about recruit)

  • Yosa (PlusWitness Waste Management): need to improve body language, show the picture if there is pain, one year revenue, cost and profit projection, flowchart of team, rupees wise value chain,

Day 7



Amin dynamically leads the ateliers. As we are entering the last phase of the program, the problematics become more and more specifics. The participants are now invited to think about how they are going to make their projects possible. 


We also had new speakers guests from the Himalayan Climate Initiative.



Everybody worked pretty late that night, preparing their pitch for the next day.
